Virtually everything in modern society runs on energy. It is, therefore, no surprise that the United States needs infrastructure projects capable of delivering more energy, whether in the form of gasoline, diesel fuel, electricity, or something else.

How the Permitting Bill Finds Hidden Power in Old Lines

America needs more transmission capacity, and fast. New lines take several years to permit and build, but one of the quickest, cheapest sources of capacity is already strung across the country: the lines we have. A suite of solutions called advanced transmission technologies, or ATTs, can push far more power over today’s towers and wires. Yet the rules for planning and paying for the grid give utilities little reason to embrace them. The Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act (BAAJA), a permitting reform bill recently introduced in the Senate, would change that status quo in three ways: writing ATTs into long-term grid planning, holding utilities accountable for considering them, and clearing duplicative reviews for upgrades on land that already hosts power lines.

Repealing the Roadless Rule Won’t Pave over Western Forests

For 25 years, a federal rule has restricted road construction across tens of millions of acres of national forest land in the western United States. The lands in question are not wilderness areas, which already prohibit roads and motorized use on roughly 36 million acres of U.S. Forest Service land. Instead, the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, or “Roadless Rule,” imposes a blanket restriction on roads across another 45 million acres of national forests—lands that are otherwise supposed to be managed for multiple uses.
